Frequently Asked Questions

What is the period of the UK tax year?

From 6 April to 5 April of the following year. Ex. 6 April 2020 – 5 April 2021.

What procedure do I need to follow to pay my taxes in the UK?

You do not have to do anything, it is an automatic process that takes place when you obtain the NIN (National Insurance Number). The HMRC takes care of it, which aligns your situation with regard to tax and insurance contributions.

British citizens automatically obtain the NIN upon reaching the age of sixteen. You who come from Italy with the aim of working in the United Kingdom, must instead apply for it as soon as possible.

Remember that you can only request it when you set foot on English soil.

What does PAYE mean?

PAYE (Pay As You Earn) is the tax system by which the employee’s taxes are deducted directly from their salary. In this way, the worker avoids producing a tax return.

Under what circumstances could I get a refund of overpaid taxes?

You may have overpaid taxes if:

  • You started working with the fiscal year already started or you finished before it ended, i.e. before April 5th.
  • You have not deducted any work expenses.
  • You have been assigned an emergency tax code which has not been updated.
  • You did not receive the NIN or you communicated it to the company you work for when you started work.
  • Your annual salary is less than £ 12,500.

To be informed about the method of taxation or the tax system in general or your current condition, contact the HMRC directly.

Which documents is important to know?

You must know the following documents:

  • P45: it is the document that your employer issues you when you leave your workplace. At the same time, it will also pass it on to HMRC.
  • P60: it is a summary document of your working period that your employer gives you at the end of the fiscal year. It concerns a little bit of everything: the total of your wages, any expenses and related deductions, pension contributions and various taxes. Your employer will also forward this document to HMRC.
  • P85: This is a document that you must submit to HMRC when you are leaving the UK.
  • P11D: This is a document regarding the benefits you enjoyed during your working period that your employer will deliver to you and the HMRC at the end of the fiscal year.

What documents are required to apply for a tax refund?

The P45 or P60 plus the paycheck or all the documents that your employer has given you. So please keep them carefully and make sure you receive them every time.

Also take care to keep receipts and receipts for business expenses you have incurred. It is likely that behind the request for reimbursement of the same, the HMRC will ask you for them to verify.

If you are to leave the country, when is it appropriate to request a refund of overpaid taxes?

You can claim taxes for the current fiscal year starting one month after the termination date of your employment contract.

Also, you must notify HMRC if your intention is to return to the UK within the next 3 years or less.
